AKP Recordings and JACCC present A Leisurely Swim, an evening of environmental music at sunset in a serene garden in downtown Los Angeles.
Featuring the meditative, shimmering electronics of Ki Oni, freeform sax and violin duo Patrick Shiroishi and Pauline Lay, and ethereal DJ sets from Olive Kimoto, A Leisurely Swim aims to elevate a heightened sense of awareness through deep listening.
This event is 21+.
Olive Kimoto
Olive Kimoto is a Los Angeles born and raised DJ and musician. Her sets range from driving somatic rhythms and floating synths, to leftfield 90s sounds and lush soundscapes to melt into. She has shared bills with Jon Hopkins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nicola Cruz, Jenny Hval, The Field, and more across art museums, music festivals, and clubs.
Olive hosts the monthly NTS Radio show Liquid Mirror, as well as the weekly ROVR show Endless Spiral. She travels the world playing across other stations such as HÖR, Kiosk Radio and Seoul Community Radio. She is the co-founder of the Cocteau Twins dance night, Heaven or Los Angeles at Zebulon.
Pauline Lay
Pauline Lay is an instrumentalist, composer, and events organizer in Los Angeles. She has performed and presented work at several larger institutions, venues, and areas throughout the US, but has also enjoyed the spirit of DIY venues, backyards, and cozy living rooms. Apart from her solo improvised violin and electronics performances, she currently performs and collaborates with other musicians in varying iterations and genres from wildly improvised duos to moderately organized ensembles.
Ki Oni
Ki Oni is the pseudonym of ambient artist Chuck Soo-Hoo, whose work inhabits a surreal space between the artificial and natural worlds, a liminal zone where the fabricated blends with the fluid and music is a river, flowing of its own accord. Last year saw the release of A Leisurely Swim To Everlasting Life, Ki Oni’s spiritual meditation on the relationship between sound and its environment.
Soo-Hoo splits his time between working at dublab, L.A.'s freeform radio station, and co-hosting Contact Wave, the station's resident ambient and experimental music program. He has previously released music on Inner Islands, Atlantic Rhythms, Doom Trip, Geographic North, Never Content, A Red Thread, Umé Records, KMAN 92.5, and Pyramid Blood.
Patrick Shiroishi
Patrick Shiroishi is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles who is perhaps best known for his extensive and incredibly intense work with the saxophone. Over the last decade he has established himself as one of the premier improvising musicians in Los Angeles, playing solo and in numerous collaborative projects. Shiroishi may well be considered a foundational player in the city’s vast musical expanse.
