This exhibit showcases the work of the masters and up-and-coming artists from Beikoku Shodo Kenkyu Kai, founded by the late Reverend Kanshu Ikuta and his wife Hiroko Ikuta in 1965. Beikoku Shodo Kenkyukai continues to outreach to new students and inspires interest in their style of shodo throughout the United States and Japan.
Shodo (書道), “the way of writing”, is the traditional art of Japanese calligraphy that uses brushes and special ink to artistically express the strokes of Japanese characters. It is a disciplined style that emphasizes simplicity, balance, and a connection between mind and body. Within the characters, one can discover a rhythm and delicacy, strength and flow, a groundedness and agility.
