March 3rd marks Hinamatsuri, or Girl’s Day, a cherished Japanese tradition celebrating the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls. Families across Japan commemorate this special occasion by displaying beautifully crafted Hina dolls, a tradition that has been passed down for generations.
In honor of Hinamatsuri, JACCC presents a stunning Hina doll display inside the George J. Doizaki Gallery, in conjunction with the DŌ (The Way): A Culminating Exhibition of Tradition & Transformation exhibition, as well as another display in the lobby. Visitors can view two exquisite Hina sets, including a seven-tiered arrangement donated by Iris Teragawa, showcasing the elegance and craftsmanship of this time-honored tradition.
Complementing the Hina displays, a collection of Kokeshi dolls, donated by Kitty Sankey, will also be on view. These simple yet charming wooden dolls, crafted for over 150 years, feature intricate painted designs and hold a special place in Japanese folk art.
We invite families, friends, and visitors of all ages to experience this beautiful cultural display. Take in the artistry, learn about the significance of Hinamatsuri, and capture a memorable moment in front of these treasured heirlooms.
