Learn about the unique mechanics of bunraku in this closer look at Japanese traditional puppetry, led by members of Japan's National Theater! Master puppeteers will demonstrate key techniques of one-person and three-person puppet manipulation in bunraku theater, and some participants will have the opportunity to try operating puppets themselves.
Bunraku, a dramatic art integrating performances of skilled puppetry, shamisen music, and narration, has evolved since the early 17th century in Japan and is recognized by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.”
Portions of the program will be spoken in Japanese with English translation.
This program is co-presented by JACCC and Bob Baker Marionette Theater.

About Bob Baker Marionette Theater
The Bob Baker Marionette Theater was founded in 1963 by Los Angeles puppeteer and artist Bob Baker. Today, Bob's legacy lives on through his lifetime of work—over 3,000 handcrafted marionettes and a repertoire of beloved performances —which have enlivened the hearts and minds of millions for over 60 years. The Theater is home to regular marionette shows, special events, a vibrant and robust workshop, and a legacy of Los Angeles memories. Our mission is to preserve, educate, and innovate at the intersection of Puppetry and the Allied Arts.
