Picture this: you're eight years old, sitting cross-legged on tatami mats while your grandmother (obāchan) pours steaming hōjicha into delicate cups. The roasted tea's warm aroma fills the air as she places a piece of crunchy karintō beside your cup. These weren't just snack breaks, they were sacred moments where stories flowed as freely as the tea, and life lessons were wrapped in gentle conversation.

This is the heart of MISE's 2025 holiday gift box, Tea Time with Obāchan. More than just a collection of Japanese goods, it's an invitation to recreate those precious intergenerational moments that so many of us treasure.

Yuko Makuuchi, the Director of Retail Store & Exhibition Center, knew she wanted to capture something special. "We wanted to recreate that kind of moment with this gift box," she explains. "Familiar flavors, handmade pieces, and a sense of being cared for, just like sitting with obāchan."

But recreating childhood magic isn't simple. It required a journey to Kyoto, where Yuko connected with artisans who've been perfecting their crafts for generations. She found a ceramics studio whose tea vessels seem to hold whispered secrets, and a furoshiki company that's been turning fabric into art for decades. Together, they created custom pieces just for this box, each one carrying the soul of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The collaboration gets even more interesting with Northern California's Deux Cranes chocolatier Michiko Marron-Kibbey, who transformed the beloved karintō into heritage-inspired chocolates that bridge East and West. It's tradition meeting innovation in the most delicious way possible.

Every element tells a story: the gentle hōjicha that Japanese grandmothers have served children for centuries, the handcrafted ceramics that honor ancient techniques, the custom furoshiki that wraps everything in beauty, and chocolates that taste like childhood memories reimagined.

What makes this even more meaningful? These aren't just one-off partnerships. The relationships Yuko built are laying groundwork for a major 2026 exhibition featuring over twenty Kyoto artisans, ensuring these ancient crafts continue to thrive.

When you open Tea Time with Obāchan, you're not just getting products. You're getting an experience, a moment to pause, breathe, and maybe create new memories with the people you love.
