The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) partnered with Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's to bring a transformative cultural experience to Diego Cruz, a 21-year-old stage 4 osteosarcoma patient whose lifelong dream of visiting Japan seemed impossible.
JACCC participants Hirokazu Kosaka, Master Artist in Residence, Chester Ikei, Ukulele Teacher, Emi Osaki, Community Arts Manager, and Kuni Yoshida, Calligraphy Teacher, were instrumental in creating a profound cultural immersion directly in Cruz's hospital room. The experience included a traditional tea ceremony, calligraphy demonstration, seasonal music performance, and authentic Japanese culinary delights.
“We’re very thankful to our dedicated staff for creating such a beautiful experience—one that perfectly aligns with our mission”, said Patricia Wyatt, JACCC President & CEO.
"While Diego couldn't travel to Japan, we brought Japan to him," said Child Life Specialist Joanne Ordono. "Our goal was to provide more than medical care—we wanted to nurture his spirit."
Cruz, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to experience a culture he had long admired. The event underscores JACCC's commitment to cultural understanding and compassionate community support.
