Summer Festival Season Comes Alive Across Little Tokyo & Beyond

As the weather warms and the days grow longer, Little Tokyo and neighboring communities across Los Angeles prepare for a vibrant season of traditional Japanese summer festivals. These family-friendly celebrations take place throughout the summer and feature street dancing, martial arts demonstrations, taiko drumming, and authentic Japanese festival food.

Like many aspects of Japanese culture, these festivals trace their roots to ancient Shinto and Buddhist traditions. Originally held as purification rituals intended to ward off illness and appease spirits during the intense summer heat, the gatherings gradually evolved over centuries into the lively community celebrations enjoyed today.

Among the most cherished summer traditions are Obon celebrations, held at Buddhist temples from June through August to honor the return of deceased relatives’ spirits to their ancestral homes. Participating locations include the Gardena Buddhist Church, the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple, the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, the San Fernando Valley Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, the Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, and the West L.A. Buddhist Temple. Other notable seasonal celebrations include the SEJSCC Cultural Festival & Ondo at the Southeast Japanese School & Community Center in Norwalk and the Long Beach Japanese Cultural Festival.

One of the season’s largest events, the annual Nisei Week Festival, takes place each August in Little Tokyo. The festival begins with its grand parade, followed by a family-friendly celebration on JACCC’s Isamu Noguchi Plaza and a closing ceremony.
